Tokyo,
October 23, 2006 — Casio Hitachi Mobile Communications
Co., Ltd. (Casio Hitachi MC) and its parent company, Casio
Computer Co., Ltd. announced today that they have entered
the North American mobile phone market with the new G’zOne
TYPE-V, a mobile phone with superior water/shock-resistance.
Casio Hitachi MC, the developer of the new phone, began
supplying phones to Verizon Wireless.
Casio’s
success with mobile phones began with the February 2000
Japan release of the water/shock-resistant G’zOne
model. In July 2003, the company introduced a camera-equipped
mobile phone in South Korea, in a partnership with the South
Korean company, LG TeleCom. Then, in April 2004, it established
Casio Hitachi MC, a joint venture with Hitachi, Ltd., to
leverage the two firms’ powerful proprietary technologies
to develop and deliver user-friendly products with world-leading
functionality.
The new G’zOne TYPE-V from Casio Hitachi MC is the
masterpiece of the series. Based on the company's popular
water/shock-resistant G’zOne mobile phones —
which boast a proven track record in Japan and South Korea
— the G’zOne TYPE-V has passed the toughest
tests and complies with several US military standards. The
phones are being marketed by Verizon Wireless in the United
States. With this step, Casio and Casio Hitachi MC have
arrived in earnest on the global mobile phone market.
The US mobile phone market has about 180 million subscribers.*
Verizon Wireless, which has adopted the CDMA system, is
one of the largest mobile phone operators in the country,
with 54.8 million subscribers.
