TOKYO, July 18, 2017 — Casio Computer Co., Ltd. announced today that Yamagata Casio Co., Ltd., its manufacturing base in Japan, will build a new plant in order to further increase production efficiency for mainstay Casio watch products. The new facility will produce precision gears, which are key components of a watch, and analog movements, which are the drive units, as well as perform all the watch assembly processes, right up to the finished product.
Yamagata Casio manufactures minute gears with high precision measured in microns, and performs automated assembly of analog movements that incorporate those gears, using robots and image recognition technology. With a focus on high-end models for brands such as G-SHOCK shock-resistant watches and OCEANUS high-performance analog watches, the company produces high-quality timepieces by utilizing technology and skilled human perception. This includes Yamagata Casio’s Premium Production Line where watches are assembled by a select team of certified technicians.
With construction beginning in July 2017, the new plant is scheduled for completion in April 2018, with operations commencing in May. The manufacturing of precision gears will be relocated from the present molding factory, resulting in greater efficiency through start-to-finish assembly of analog movements in one location. The analog movements and completed products will be assembled in the clean room located in the center of the floor. Strict measures will be in place to prevent any intrusion of dust and other foreign matter that occurs when people and materials move in and out. The dedicated watch facility will realize efficient manufacturing while maintaining quality at a high level.
Initially, the plant will go into operation after moving in existing production equipment, but there will be enough floor space to accommodate additional new equipment (clean room floor space will be about 1.5 times greater than present). By ensuring facility scalability for future increases in product demand, the new plant will strengthen production capacity for further growth of the watch business.
In the future, the new plant will expand the use of product 3D design data for the entire engineering chain, in addition to already implemented applications for component manufacturing. Robots and IoT for automation and control on the production line will also be introduced. The plan is eventually to transform the new facility into a smart plant at the core of Casio's global production system.
