Automated assembly line

TOKYO, August 9, 2018 — Casio Computer Co., Ltd. announced today that a production line for the automated assembly of digital watches in the popular price range will go into operation in late August at Yamagata Casio Co., Ltd., its manufacturing subsidiary in Japan.

At Yamagata Casio, digital watches in the popular price range were previously assembled by hand. However, the commencement of operations on the new line will enable automation of all processes from assembly of the modules inside the watches to the assembly of the watches themselves, allowing an approximate three-fold increase in production efficiency. There will also be dramatic improvement in efficiency for the circuit boards supplied to the new line. As a result, the new line will reduce production costs by more than 50%, bringing them into line with costs at overseas plants.

Production capacity in one eight-hour day of operations is estimated at 100,000 watches, which is the previous monthly production capacity. Operating hours can be increased due to automation, so the new line can also accommodate increased production in the future to meet demand.

The product to be produced is the A159WA standard series watch, which has been sold since 1989. This watch became popular because it is very reliable for a wrist watch while being reasonably priced and also has a simple and timeless design. The watch, which also includes variations such as the color, is a long-selling product that is loved all around the world.

High-mix, low-volume production is the norm for wrist watches, and this is typically not suited to automation. However, the high-volume sales of the A159WA over many years and the goal of efficient manufacturing in Japan where production costs are high made it favorable for Casio to develop this automated assembly line.

Going forward, Casio will also promote automation for the attachment of watch bands, packaging, and other aspects of production as it continues to seek to reduce production costs and fulfills plans to increase production of standard series watches at Yamagata Casio to meet the high demand for “Made in Japan” products.
